Back in the day…
Built in 1837, Upperthong Village Hall started its life as a day school, teaching scholars in reading, writing and even accounts. However, its remit stretched beyond education, providing a centre for local business transactions and, over the years, much-needed accommodation for preachers. Some 40 years later, the Hall became the venue the Community’s Sunday School. Central heating was installed and in 1907 a small amount of building work created a porch to the rear of the building, creating the space we enjoy today.
The Community to the rescue…
In 1964, the Hall ceased to be used as a Sunday School and the building was closed. It remained unused until the autumn of 1970 when it was rescued from dereliction by a group of local residents. Led by Cllr Jeremy Kilner, a recovery plan began to take shape. Throughout 1971, all manner of fund-raising activities got underway; from car rallies and film shows, to coffee mornings and cake stalls. The following years saw the introduction of disco events and the forming of a community youth group. Bit by bit, improvements were being made to the building and helping to unite the community of Upperthong.
A renewed energy…
Jump forward to 1990 and the need for a more comprehensive review of what was required to keep the Hall from falling into a state of complete disrepair. A new roof was top of the list. By 1993 it was clear many more building improvements would have to be considered. The Upperthong Village Hall registered Charity No 1027546 was established and a much-needed grant secured to help with investments to bring the Hall up to modern building standards. However, additional funds and pure hands-on help was required too, and local residents and businesses worked tirelessly to complete the necessary work and alterations. Having listed building status, the Hall’s exterior has remained untouched.
Keeping up appearances…
As with all old, but much-loved buildings, continual investment of time, energy and finance is required to keep the Hall safe and fit for purpose. So many community-based activities fill the Hall, a focal point for the locals and providing much appreciated funds.
Central to village life…
